Its that time of year again! Spring Cleaning! Although this year it may not seem like spring yet, its right around the corner. My FAVORITE place to organize in the spring is… the garage!
Somehow during winter, things find their way into the garage and amass over those cold winter nights. Its time to purge. Put on some clothes you don’t mind getting dirty and get your trash and donation bags ready.
Step 1: Purge the Junk
Get rid of all the things that you never use. If you haven’t used it in a year or more… Get rid of it! The likelihood that you will use it again is slim, and its only taking up unnecessary space. Purging feels great and helps you figure out what you have that you need to find storage for.
Step 2: Rethink your space
Now that you have gotten rid of all those unused items, it is time to develop a solution for what you do have. Think about what you need to access frequently, what is a one time per year use, etc. Rethink how you use things and when you will use them again.
Step 3: Create a system and stick to it
Whether you need new shelves or can use what you have – it is important to create a new system, because obviously what you were doing before didn’t work. If you need shelves, I recommend the container store elfa shelves – they are durable and look great.
Think about your space, how you need to use it and what your daily routines are. Form your system around that so it makes it easy for you to stay organized.
Happy Spring Cleaning!
